College screenwriting programs

Online courses run seven weeks in duration. Upon graduation students can apply to entry level potions in advertising agencies, digital design agencies, corporate film production agencies, and other creative entities.

This program is 30 credit hours, and students take most classes online in the spring and fall semesters. There are a few classes that are taken on campus, technically making this a hybrid program. Azusa Pacific University is in close proximity to Hollywood, allowing for students to learn from lectures and collaboration opportunities with industry professionals.

This MFA is a hybrid program, with all core courses, advanced courses, and electives taken online. There is only one on-campus course that is required. After completing the core course requirements, students may select one of these Advanced Focus areas:.

This MFA in Professional Screenwriting can potentially prepare students for job opportunities in these fields:. All of the degrees offered, from the Associate of Arts through the Master of Fine Arts, are taught by industry experienced professors who work in conjunction with over 60 of the top online entertainment specialists to bring a quality curriculum to all students.

The various fields of study offered include:. A total of units are required for graduation with 36 core units, 42 major units, nine elective units, and 45 liberal arts units. This graduate level certificate track occurs over three academic quarters. Students will participate in 30 video lectures and weekly screenwriting workshops.

The video lectures expose students to the theories and techniques of analyzing films and other scripts, providing ample exercises and sample writings. The screenwriting workshops allow students to submit their own work for reviews and critiques by professors and peers. With a limited class size of eight students, the workshops allow for a more personalized educational experience and bonding with fellow classmates. At the end of the three quarters students will be awarded a certificate of completion.

Students must meet basic eligibility requirements with most being accepted to the program. There are six total courses, with four required sequential classes:. They collaborate with Producing and Directing Fellows to produce their work. They also write a feature-length screenplay. In the second year, students may develop for television in addition to writing films. They also have the opportunity to collaborate with their peers from other disciplines, either by writing scripts for second-year thesis projects or by helping Directing and Producing Fellows develop thesis portfolio material.

Only seven students are admitted each year. In the first semester, students learn characterization, story structure, dialogue, and conflict. In the three subsequent semesters, students complete three original feature screenplays. Students are also encouraged to study adaptation and rewriting.

Students are also required to intern. USC offers a B. Over the course of the program, students work with real industry professionals in workshop-style classes. University of Cincinnati offers a screenwriting certificate which can be added on to any undergraduate major.

To complete the certificate program, students take introductory-level courses focusing on storytelling and script formatting. Students graduate with a solid understanding of both the artistic and business sides of screenwriting. Central Washington University students who are interested in pursuing a career as a screenwriter can major in Film Production, but focus on Screenwriting.

A practicum is also required. SUNY at Purchase College is one of the only colleges in the country to offer an undergraduate degree in writing for both the screen and the stage. Classes average just 15 students at a time.

One such degree is a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Screenwriting. Uniquely, the first two years of the program are spent honing skills in a variety of filmmaking areas.

They they immerse themselves into screenwriting by preparing an entire feature-length script, then preparing it for the professional marketplace. Students then choose between short form scriptwriting, or the more traditional script analysis and production.
